Kids Belong began in 2013 as an effort to help our community rally around foster care. There are hundreds of kids in foster care in West Michigan, and there are just never quite enough homes to care for them all. Over the years we’ve seen an overburdened system lean heavily on some of its most overburdened families and we’ve thought, there has to be a better way to do this.
Our strategy is twofold
- We offer direct supports to foster, adopt, kinship families (FAK). Clothing closets, help with holidays like Christmas, Easter, Birthdays, Back To School, etc. The wider community has an opportunity to contribute and support foster families through our events and programs. We support all families from all agencies no matter what type of foster care involvement and resolution, ie adoption, guardianship, foster care, kinship placements, etc
- We build a community of support among the families who are doing this important work and caring for these kids who come from hard places. Events for families, support groups, parent to parent connections both in person and virtual. There is nothing that can replace the support of another parent who understands, who get it, and with whom you can share your experiences in an understanding and non judgmental way. Kids Belong is building the community of FAK families and that community is making a difference in the lives of our families.
